Genomics in Education Workshop Summary

Genomics in Education: Gene Annotation and Comparison
JUNE 16 - 19, 2009

WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY
ST. LOUIS, MO

This event was an invitational "discussion and consensus-building" workshop that brought together about 40 people who are integrating computational tools and genomics into research-based educational programs (i.e., courses in which students learn by doing research). Scientific sessions focused on available bioinformatics and visualization tools, integration of bioinformatics with bench science, unmet needs in computational infrastructure (including easily accessed user interfaces), unmet needs in curriculum development, and methods for future collaboration. The goal was to create a community consensus about best targets for further development and best practices to achieve educational aims. The workshop organizers were Sarah Elgin (Washington U.), Dave Micklos (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory), Steve Slater (U. Wisconsin) and Sue Wessler (U. Georgia).
